“You’re improvising largely over improvised music.”
Shedding is Louisville KY based musician Connor Bell.
Everything Becomes a Habit (Accumulated Blur) displays Bell’s compositional style with a focused approach on what appears, at first, to be a simple palette of sounds. As each track progresses, chords become more defined, resonance and small events peak up from under central throughlines. There is an intentional lack of tempo to the compositions, a feature not a bug. This approach defines the compositions, as Bell notes he tried to “graft” this lack of tempo onto specific compositional ideas, a difficult task that yielded very dynamic work.
“There's that inherent back and forth reactive process as you're maybe changing the harmonic ideas to suit the sound and changing the sound to suit the harmonic ideas. Once I'd lay down a layer or two of improvised synth, I'd start sculpting and adding things. Sometimes super loose, sometimes very specific.”
